Aurora Borealis Rotaract sponsors a day of fun and learning...

In order to ensure that we did the best job possible, our club took the time to try out the leadership games the week before. And as any great leader knows... great planning is the key to success.

The blind lead the blind. That's a triangle???

First we were introduced to the group of 80+ aspiring leaders. Many of the Rotarians were a nervous wreck... they were sure there was no way we could handle a group of high schoolers that large.

However they soon found that not only could we handle them, but the students really enjoyed the chance to have a break from the "old folks", and behaved like the true future leaders they are.

The group. Rotaractors intro.

For the leadership activities we broke them up into four groups and assigned them to one of four stations. At each station was a different group of Rotaractors with a different set of leadership challenges.

After 20 minutes at one station, the students were then rotated to the next station.

Station One: Blind Leading the Blind

Station Two: Acid River

Station Three: Guided Stepping Stones

Station Four: Office and Mine Field

The Office. Mine Field.

After the leadership activities, Rotaractor John Pile BBQ'd an absolutely delicious feast of 100 hamburgers, 40 hot dogs, and 10 vegi-burgers.

At the same time, the rest of the Rotaract club set up for the "secret activity" planned for later that evening.

Preparing. Preparing.

The Rotaractors take a break to enjoy John's mouth watering BBQ.

The secret activity is revealed to the RYLA students! A dance, complete with DJ, mixed drinks (non-alcoholic of course), and pool tables.

NO! Not the Macarena!

The entire day was a huge success. The kids had a great time and thanked us again and again.

The Rotarians who attended were full of appreciation as well, and they wouldn't let us leave with out promising that we'd do it again next year.

As for our perspective... it was a long day and a lot of work, but we all had a great time.
