We learned an important lesson about our Russian friends during this night of camping in the Alaskan wilderness... although not all people of the world share the American love of hotdogs, it seems that the experience of chocolate and marshmellows will bring down any international barrier.

From the start, we surprised even ourselves at how well the camp went up ... with big tents and tarps we were ready for the worst the elements could throw at us ... which turned out to be clear skies and a warm evening.

As it got darker we gathered around the campfire. Our small group started to bond as we told old favorite American jokes, and tried desperately to understand Anton's Russian jokes.

The final result was that the camping portion of the trip was a blast. By the end of the night we had even convinced Anna to sing a Russian lullaby.

And even if the specific concept of a smore did not impress them, it was at least clear that the individual ingredients did ... marshellow after marshmellow after marshmellow ...
